Downey’s Visioning Process

A Vision for Downey’s Future

At the most recent congregational meeting our moderator, Carole Commons, announced that we would be building on the momentum from the “Be Thou Our Vision” campaign to establish a formal visioning process for Downey Avenue Christian Church.  The growing energy and momentum at Downey presents us with the opportunity to reflect on what God is calling us to do and what our community needs us to become in the coming years.  By taking the time to reflect on a cohesive vision for our future, we can strategically align our ministries and work together to become the best church we can be, for as the scripture says: “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18).

Over the last several months, members of the Administrative Board, Leadership Council, and Staff have been working together to lay the groundwork for this important visioning process.  Our goal is to dedicate 2017 as a year to discern the mission of our congregation, develop a vision to guide Downey’s growth in the coming years, and propose any necessary changes to our current leadership structure and by-laws to help guide us towards that vision.  By going through this important process, the mission and vision that emerges from the congregation will help guide any decisions, ministries, and programs as we move forward together.

We would like the visioning process to be as open and transparent as possible, with as much input and feedback as possible from the congregation along the way.  The Steering Committee for the visioning process will be formally charged by the Administrative Board to oversee several sub-groups:

¨ One to identify a mission statement, visioning documents, and core values

¨ One to reflect on models for the structure of our Administrative Board, Leadership Council, and Trustees

¨ One to review the by-laws and policies necessary to help us implement the vision

¨ One to discern the structure and role of our deacons and elders

Each member of the congregation is encouraged to serve on or provide input to at least one of these sub-groups so that the final vision is one that has the strength of our whole community behind it.  If you would like to serve on a sub-group, please contact the church office or send an email to vision@downeyavenue.com.

The Steering Committee will provide reports and updates to the congregation through the newsletter and other avenues with the proposed timeline:

May 1 – formally commence the Visioning Process by introducing it to the congregation

May 14 – determine sub-group members from those who have volunteered

Week of June 4 – sub-groups meet to brainstorm ideas for their area

July 9 – sub-groups present findings and proposals to the Steering Committee

July 16 – Steering Committee compiles draft and distributes to sub-groups / congregation for feedback

August 3 – sub-groups present updated proposals to the Steering Committee for review and edits

October 5 – Steering Committee submits cohesive proposal to Administrative Board for approval

November 5 – Administrative Board presents Visioning Document Proposal to the congregation

December 3 – Congregational Meeting to approve A Vision for Downey’s Future

Please continue to hold Downey Avenue Christian Church in prayer during this exciting time as we celebrate our strong history by building a bridge to the future!
